Texanbybirth, I don't think that quote is from Lincoln. I believe it was said by William J. H. Boetcker in 1942.

Hey Bobby, thanks for commenting! I think you're right about it being unfair of me to label the people having the tea parties as Republican, because you're right, a lot of them are Independents. What I should have said was Conservatives. Although, I'd be willing to bet that you, and most of the other Independents at the tea parties, voted for Republicans anyways, which makes the point a bit mute. I consider myself very much an Independent as well, and I've voted for third party candidates for President when I've felt like the major parties don't represent me. That would be my advice as well to any Independent that's disaffected by the two major parties.

The point of this post was to wonder why people weren't having protest Tea Parties before now?

As far as how much taxes should be, I guess that's just a difference of opinion and reasonable people can differ on that. I don't mind the government taxing us more than 10%, and I don't mind giving more than 10% to God.

I know this is an older post, but I feel I must make a response. I have to challenge the claim that the tea parties are just a bunch of Republicans. I am an registered Independent and I have had it with the spending in Washington. I don't care who is doing the spending, Republicans, Democrats, it doesn't matter to me. I don't care that it is Mr. Obama - I care that ridiculous spending has gone on for far too long.

I also have to say that I have some serious issues with the way Mr. Bush handled certain things in his presidency. The PATRIOT ACT doesn't have a Sunset - and that's a serious issue.

So, no, Mr. Swee - I did not attend a Tea Party because I dislike Mr. Obama - I attended because I've had enough.

As a side note, I completely disagree with raising taxes for the wealthy - just because they are rich doesn't mean they deserve higher taxes. I say if the Church can do it with 10% of people's income then our government should be able to as well. I don't care whether you're poor, rich, make minimum wage or millions of dollars each year - you're taxes should not exceed 10%.

I went to my local tea party because I am sick and tired of the outrageous spending in Washington by Democrats and Republicans!

TexanbyBirth

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people' s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Don't recall ever saying the word outrage. You're projecting.

No, just aware. Anyone who makes the statement "Almost everyone that’s protesting just got their taxes decreased by President Obama. Check your pay check, I bet yours went up too!" or anyone who agrees with that, is obviously not aware. The same goes for every "point" argued above.

The outrage will come next April when people don't see their usual refund, if any, or even have to pay some of that money back because they thought they were getting a tax cut.

You haven't lost me at all.

I have $30 less being withheld in my check but still have the same tax liability. I get it.

Why should I be outraged?

Well, I just made a point without even trying... this is too easy.

I know I've totally lost you but try to keep up.

The point you're actually asking about is this:
Less money is being withheld from your check. Your tax liability has.not.changed. Let me know how that goes for you on April 15 2010.

My bad, I had $30 less withheld from my paycheck.

What's your point?

Here's a clue for you regarding that "tax cut" you're seeing in your paycheck: w-i-t-h-h-o-l-d-i-n-g.

Maybe you can ask one of those conservative tea-baggers who couldn't conceivably have an intelligent reason to attend a tea-bagging party. They would know.
